Nintendo Reveal: Detective Sequel Thrill Ride Incoming
Nintendo's latest mystery, "Emio, the Smiling Man," is the newest addition to the resurrected Famicom Detective Club series. Producer Sakamoto positions it as the culmination of the entire series.
Famicom Detective Club Returns with a New Murder Mystery After Three Decades
The original Famicom Detective Club games, The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind, debuted in the late 1980s. They cast players as young detectives solving murders in rural Japan. Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club continues this tradition, placing players at the Utsugi Detective Agency, investigating a series of killings linked to the infamous Emio, the Smiling Man.
Announced on July 17th, the game launches globally on August 29th, 2024, for the Nintendo Switch, marking the first new entry in 35 years. A previous cryptic trailer hinted at the game, showing a mysterious figure in a trench coat and a smiley-faced paper bag.
The game's synopsis describes the discovery of a murdered student, his head covered with a similar paper bag. This unsettling detail connects the case to a string of 18-year-old unsolved murders and the urban legend of Emio, who supposedly grants his victims "a smile that will last forever."
Players investigate the murder of Eisuke Sasaki, following clues that lead to past cold cases. They'll interview classmates, examine crime scenes, and gather evidence.
Ayumi Tachibana, a returning character known for her sharp interrogation skills, assists the player. Shunsuke Utsugi, the detective agency director, who previously appeared in the second game, leads the investigation.
Mixed Fan Reactions to the Announcement
Nintendo's cryptic teaser generated considerable buzz, with one fan accurately predicting the game's nature. While many welcomed the return of the point-and-click mystery, others expressed disappointment, particularly those who preferred different genres. Some social media comments humorously highlighted the surprise of a narrative-driven game.
Exploring Diverse Mystery Themes
Producer Yoshio Sakamoto, in a recent YouTube video, discussed the series' creation. He described the original games as interactive movies. The Famicom Detective Club games are lauded for their captivating stories and atmosphere. The 2021 Switch remakes inspired Sakamoto to create a new installment.Sakamoto cited horror filmmaker Dario Argento as an influence, particularly Argento's use of music and editing in Deep Red, which inspired The Girl Who Stands Behind. Composer Kenji Yamamoto described how Sakamoto directed him to create a terrifying final scene using dramatic audio shifts.
Emio, the Smiling Man, is a new urban legend created specifically for the game. Sakamoto aims to provide players with a thrilling experience centered around uncovering the truth behind this legend. While Emio focuses on urban legends, previous installments explored superstitious beliefs and ghost stories.
The Missing Heir involved a village with a saying about the dead returning to protect their family's wealth. The Girl Who Stands Behind featured a ghost story connected to the murder.
A Product of Collaborative Creativity
Sakamoto has discussed the creative freedom afforded to the team during development, with Nintendo only providing the title. The original games received positive critical reception, scoring 74/100 on Metacritic.
Sakamoto describes Emio – The Smiling Man as the culmination of the team's experience, a product of extensive collaboration and a dedication to a compelling narrative and visuals. He anticipates the game's ending will spark significant discussion.
