Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Theory Is Looking Pretty Good Right About Now
The buzz surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2 has reached a fever pitch following this morning's reveal, and the rumors about using Joy-Cons as a mouse are gaining traction. During the reveal trailer, there's a striking scene where detached Joy-Cons are placed on a surface with their attachment sides down. They seamlessly connect to a pair of connectors that appear to have flat bottoms, and then glide across the surface in a manner reminiscent of a mouse on a mouse pad. A closer look reveals what appears to be a slider pad on one of the connectors, lending further credibility to the mouse-like functionality theory.
Speculation has been rife in the lead-up to the Nintendo Switch 2's unveiling, with many believing that a sensor inside the Joy-Cons, akin to those found in computer mice, could enable this feature. However, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these rumors or elaborate on their potential implications. Enthusiasts have theorized that this could enhance gameplay for titles like Civilization, which are typically more enjoyable with a mouse and keyboard setup. Yet, given Nintendo's track record of innovation, there's also excitement about how this feature might be integrated into their first-party titles in novel ways. The possibilities remain open-ended.
While the potential for mouse support on the Nintendo Switch 2, along with the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button, remains shrouded in mystery, we do have some concrete information. The console is officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, slated for release in 2025, and a new Mario Kart game is in development for it. It will also be backward compatible with the original Switch, and more details about upcoming software will be shared at a Direct in April.
