Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons: A Potential Mouse Mode?

Emerging circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer a novel functionality: operating as computer mice. While the practicality of this mouse-like mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

The intriguing evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.

In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mouse bottoms, hints at potential mouse functionality in the upcoming console.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These designations haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they are new, unreleased products. The reported 90 x 90mm size of these tape pieces suggests they could cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, potentially requiring trimming during assembly. The legitimacy of this information, however, remains unconfirmed.

Not a First for Handhelds

While a mouse-like controller mode is consistent with Nintendo's experimental approach, it's not unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features a similar mode for its right controller, transforming it into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to enhance its functionality as a mouse.

The Legion GO also boasts magnetic rails for attaching controllers—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. In this respect, the Legion GO might offer a preview of Nintendo's next hybrid console.
