Nintendo Switch 2 Size Revealed

Apr 13,25

The very first moments of the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer reveal an exciting evolution: the new console is noticeably larger than its predecessor. As the old Joy-Con unhook themselves from the original Switch, we witness the tablet section expanding and transforming into its upgraded form. This significant size increase signals Nintendo's shift from the pocket-friendly handhelds of its past towards embracing the era of larger portable devices, akin to the Steam Deck and iPad.

But just how much bigger is the Switch 2 compared to the original? While Nintendo hasn't released official size dimensions yet, we can estimate based on the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, we got hands-on experience with a Switch 2 mock-up crafted by peripheral designer Genki. Initially, we couldn't verify its accuracy, but Nintendo's new trailer showcases a console remarkably similar to this mock-up, down to the smallest details. Therefore, our measurements from CES are likely close to the final dimensions of the Switch 2.

Let's explore the estimated size of the Switch 2.

The Genki mock-up vs Nintendo's official Switch 2 design.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size

Our estimates suggest that the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement refers to the diagonal length of the display itself, excluding the bezels. This aligns with a rumor from early 2024, leading us to predict that the display will be approximately **177mm wide and 99mm tall**.

If these estimates hold true, the Switch 2 will boast a screen that is nearly 30% larger diagonally than the original console's 6.2-inch LCD display, and **66% larger in overall area**. This substantial increase could make the Switch 2 a visually impressive console, provided the display technology meets high standards.

Compared to other handhelds, the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen makes the new console's display 45% larger diagonally and 111% larger in surface area. Meanwhile, the Switch OLED's 7-inch display means the Switch 2 will be 14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in total area.

When the original Switch launched in 2017, it faced little competition, but now it contends with portable PCs like the Steam Deck. The original Steam Deck and the Steam Deck OLED, with their 7-inch and 7.4-inch displays respectively, have larger screens than any previous Switch model. However, the Switch 2's 8-inch screen will still surpass the Steam Deck OLED, being 8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in overall area.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size

With a significantly larger screen, the Switch 2 console itself is also bigger. It's clear that you'll need spacious pockets or a bag to carry this console comfortably.

Our measurements of Genki’s mock-up at CES indicate that the Switch 2 is just over 10.5 inches from edge to edge, including the Joy-Cons, and 4.5 inches from top to bottom. Through meticulous analysis (scaling images from the trailer to match our photos of the mock-up and adjusting them to actual size), we estimate the Switch 2 to be approximately **265mm long and 115mm tall**.

For comparison, the original Switch measures 239mm long and 102mm tall. If our figures are accurate, the **Switch 2 is approximately 25% larger than its predecessor**.

These dimensions would make the Switch 2 around 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and roughly 12% smaller than the larger Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm).

Although we couldn't measure the depth of the Genki mock-up precisely, the Switch 2 appears to maintain a similar half-inch thickness to the original Switch. Thus, while the overall footprint increases significantly, the thickness remains comparable.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size

The Switch 2 reveal trailer's transformation animation indicates that the Joy-Con controllers will retain a similar width to the original Switch, but they've grown taller. Based on our analysis, we believe the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons will be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall** – the same width as the original controllers (excluding the slot system) but 13mm taller to match the new console's size. If correct, the **new Joy-Con are approximately 13% larger** than their predecessors.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size

Subtracting the estimated Joy-Con size from the overall console dimensions, we calculate that the **Switch 2 screen unit is approximately 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This represents about a **31% increase over the original Switch** screen unit.

This unit size can accommodate the 8-inch 16:9 screen, likely featuring an 11mm bezel on each side and an 8mm bezel at the top and bottom. These side bezels are slimmer than the original Switch, while the top and bottom bezels are similar.

Please note, these are all estimates based on our best efforts and may not be exact when Nintendo releases the official dimensions. However, our experience with the Genki mock-up gives us confidence that we're close to the mark. We anticipate a console that's roughly 25% larger than the original Switch when we finally get our hands on it later this year.
