Nintendo Switch 2: Unveiling the New Pocket Flagship
The official trailer for the Nintendo Switch 2 was released on January 16, 2025, taking the gaming world by surprise. Instead of an advance announcement, videos showcasing the new form factor of the console suddenly appeared on Nintendo's YouTube channels. The long-anticipated reveal date had been guessed correctly by NateTheHate, who had predicted the Switch 2 would be unveiled on that day.
If you haven't yet seen the exciting trailer, you can watch it below:

Size
From the video, it's evident that the Nintendo Switch 2 is larger than its predecessor in every dimension. The screen, Joy-Cons, and even the sticks have been slightly upsized. While exact specifications haven't been disclosed, insiders suggest the Switch 2 will measure 116 mm in height, 270 mm in width, and 14 mm in thickness. This makes it 3.1 cm wider and 1.4 cm taller than the original Switch. Additionally, rumors point to an 8-inch screen diagonal, compared to the 7-inch screen of the OLED version of the first Switch.

Design
The video presentation introduces a new design for the Joy-Cons, now featuring a magnetic connection secured by two recessed contacts within the console's body. Insiders assure that these contacts are robust and well-protected, making accidental disconnection or damage unlikely. The SL and SR buttons, now larger and metallic, facilitate the magnetic connections. While this design introduces side bezels on the screen, it's an unavoidable trade-off for the enhanced connectivity.
The controllers can be detached by sliding them to the side after pressing a button, and the holder that turns them into full-fledged joysticks has been modified. The upper part of the grips is now flat, and the Joy-Cons are inserted from the sides rather than the top. The buttons on the Joy-Cons have been slightly enlarged, and the sticks now use Hall effect sensors to combat drift issues. However, the IR camera has been removed, potentially affecting the backward compatibility of games like Ring Fit Adventure.

The console also features a microphone and a USB Type-C port on its top bezel. While their exact purposes remain undisclosed, it's speculated that these could enable direct use of wired joysticks and in-game voice chat.

What's inside?
Details about the internal components of the Switch 2 will be unveiled at the Nintendo Direct on April 2. Until then, speculation abounds. Insiders hint that the console's power might be comparable to that of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the possibility of supporting full Quad HD resolution in docked mode.
Insider consensus points to the following speculated specifications for the Switch 2:
- Processor: Custom Nvidia Tegra T239
- RAM: 12 GB
- Storage: 256 GB
- Memory Card Support: microSDHC, microSDXC, microSD Express
- Screen: LCD, 8 inches
Although an OLED version isn't expected at launch, the console's specs seem promising. Many AAA titles from previous years are anticipated to be released for the Switch 2, with the possibility of seeing Genshin Impact, whose port was announced back in 2020.
