Nintendo has officially announced that the live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda will hit theaters on March 26, 2027. This exciting news was shared via the newly launched Nintendo Today! app, unveiled during the Nintendo Direct in March 2025. While details about the movie remain scarce, the announcement itself has created a buzz among fans.

The reveal was made by none other than video game legend Shigeru Miyamoto during the showcase, as a surprise ending. Alongside the movie news, Nintendo introduced the Nintendo Today! app, a comprehensive tool for fans. This all-in-one application offers various features including a daily calendar and a news feed, designed to keep players updated in real-time. Miyamoto highlighted that following the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, fans can use the app to stay informed with daily updates.

The announcement of the Zelda movie's release date has already driven significant interest in the Nintendo Today! app, with fans eager for more groundbreaking news. Notably, the app was the first to break the Zelda movie news, even before Nintendo's official social media channels.

The live-action The Legend of Zelda movie was first announced in November 2023, a collaboration between Nintendo and Sony Pictures. Wes Ball, known for directing The Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is set to helm the project. Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad are on board as producers. While specifics about the film are still under wraps, Ball has expressed his vision for the movie to be a "live action Miyazaki," drawing inspiration from the renowned filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, creator of Studio Ghibli classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away. Ball aims for a "serious" and "grounded" adaptation, with minimal use of motion capture technology.
