Overwatch 2 Extends 6v6 Playtest
Overwatch 2's Extended 6v6 Playtest and Potential Permanent Return
Overwatch 2's 6v6 playtest, initially slated to end January 6th, has been extended due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Game Director Aaron Keller confirmed the mode's continued availability until mid-season, after which it will shift to an open queue format. This positive reception fuels speculation about its potential permanent integration into the game.
The 6v6 mode's initial appearance during November's Overwatch Classic event showcased its popularity. A subsequent playtest, running from December 17th to January 6th, further solidified its appeal. This second playtest, while omitting some classic hero abilities, quickly became a fan favorite.
The ongoing extension, announced via Keller's Twitter, allows for continued 12-player matches. While the exact end date remains unannounced, the 6v6 experimental mode will soon migrate to the Arcade section. The mid-season transition will involve a switch from role queue to open queue, with teams needing 1-3 heroes per class.
Arguments for a Permanent 6v6 Mode
The enduring success of 6v6 isn't unexpected. Since Overwatch 2's 2022 launch, the return of 6v6 has been a consistently top player request. The shift to 5v5, a significant departure from the original, altered gameplay in ways that resonate differently with various players.
Hope remains high for 6v6's permanent inclusion, potentially even within Overwatch 2's competitive playlist. This possibility hinges on the successful completion of the ongoing playtests.
