Pocketpair, the developer behind Palworld, expands into publishing, partnering with Surgent Studios for a new horror title.

Pocketpair Publishing, a newly established branch of Pocketpair, announced on X/Twitter its first publishing venture: a unique horror game from Surgent Studios, the creators of Tales of Kenzera: Zau. This new project will be a standalone title, unrelated to the Tales of Kenzera universe.

Surgent Studios CEO, Abubakar Salim, explained the collaboration, stating that the game will address a recurring theme within the entertainment industry. He emphasized the shared risk-taking approach between both studios, describing the upcoming game as "short and weird." While future projects within the Tales of Kenzera universe are under discussion, this new horror game represents a significant step for Surgent Studios. No release date or title has been revealed. This project is distinct from Surgent Studios' previously announced Project Uso.

Pocketpair Publishing is actively seeking proposals from other developers, emphasizing a collaborative and supportive approach. Their website states a commitment to respecting developer autonomy and vision, avoiding dictating creative direction.

John Buckley, Head of Pocketpair Publishing, highlighted the company's passion for gaming and their desire to facilitate the creative process for developers. He expressed enthusiasm for supporting Surgent Studios' new project, praising their originality and passion.

Salim, also a notable actor (known for roles in Assassin's Creed Origins and House of the Dragon), expressed his excitement about this partnership on X/Twitter, viewing it as a positive example of industry collaboration.

Tales of Kenzera: Zau, a Metroidvania game exploring themes of grief and love, received a positive reception, scoring a 7/10 from IGN. Despite this, Surgent Studios faced financial difficulties, including layoffs and redundancy notices. The partnership with Pocketpair Publishing offers significant support to the studio.

Pocketpair continues to navigate a patent infringement lawsuit filed by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo, following the remarkable sales success of Palworld.
