Palworld Explores Potential Switch Expansion

Dec 14,24

Bad news for Nintendo Switch fans hoping to catch 'em all in Palworld: a Switch version is currently off the table. This early access survival game, featuring collectible creatures similar to Pokémon, saw a surge in popularity after its 2024 launch but has since cooled. However, a major update is on the horizon.

The upcoming Sakurajima Update (June 27th) is Palworld's biggest yet, adding a new island, Pals, bosses, a higher level cap, and dedicated Xbox servers. This substantial update might reignite player interest, but unfortunately, it's PC and Xbox only for now.

While Palworld is currently an Xbox console exclusive (with PlayStation plans in the works), a Switch port seems unlikely. Pocketpair's Takuro Mizobe cited "technical reasons" in a Game File interview (via VGC), suggesting the Switch's hardware limitations.

Palworld and the Nintendo Switch: A Technical Hurdle?

The upcoming Switch 2 might offer the necessary power boost to run Palworld, especially considering its availability on the nearly 11-year-old Xbox One. However, Palworld's arguably derivative nature—a darker take on the Pokémon formula—could also be a factor preventing a Nintendo release.

Despite the Switch setback, portable Palworld play is still possible. The game reportedly runs well on the Steam Deck, providing a mobile option for PC players. The possibility of an Xbox handheld further expands potential portable gaming options should that device materialize. The future of Palworld on Nintendo platforms remains uncertain.
