Pikachu Manhole Cover: A Unique Addition to the Nintendo Museum

The upcoming Nintendo Museum in Kyoto's Uji city will feature a delightful surprise: a Pikachu-themed Poké Lid! These aren't your average manhole covers; Poké Lids are elaborately designed, Pokémon-centric works of art found across Japan.

The museum's Poké Lid showcases Pikachu and a Pokéball emerging from a classic Game Boy, a charming nod to the franchise's origins. The pixelated design adds a nostalgic touch.

Poké Lids, or Pokéfuta, are more than just pretty covers. According to the official website, there's even a playful backstory suggesting Diglett's involvement in creating the holes! They're also often designed to represent Pokémon associated with the local area. This adds an element of local charm and intrigue.

The Nintendo Museum's Poké Lid follows a successful trend. Cities like Fukuoka (featuring Alolan Dugtrio) and Ojiya City (showcasing Magikarp, its Shiny form, and Gyarados) have already embraced Poké Lids to boost tourism. These covers even serve as PokéStops in Pokémon GO, offering players an extra layer of engagement.

This initiative is part of Japan's Pokémon Local Acts campaign, using Pokémon to promote regional tourism and highlight local geography. With over 250 Poké Lids installed, the campaign continues to expand, starting with an Eevee celebration in Kagoshima Prefecture in December 2018 and expanding nationwide in July 2019.
