PlayStation Stars Program Ends After 3 Years

May 24,25

Sony has announced the termination of its PlayStation Stars loyalty program, which will cease operations less than three years after its inception. As of today, the program is closed to new members, and current members who choose to cancel their membership will be unable to rejoin. Moreover, upon cancellation, all accumulated reward points will be permanently deleted.

For those who remain enrolled, the opportunity to earn points will continue until July 23, 2025, with the ability to redeem any remaining points extended until November 3, 2026. Despite the program's end, PlayStation Stars' Digital Collectibles, including the iconic 3D digital model of a Jim Ryan bobblehead, will remain accessible for the foreseeable future, as confirmed by Sony.

Grace Chen, PlayStation's vice president of network advertising, loyalty, and licensed merchandise, stated on the PlayStation blog, "Since launching the program, we've learned a lot from evaluating the types of activities our players respond best to, and as a company, we are always evolving with player and industry trends. Through this evaluation, we have decided to refocus our efforts and will be winding down the current version of PlayStation Stars. We will continue to evaluate our key findings from this program, and are looking into ways to build upon these learnings."

No details were provided about a potential replacement for the scheme, nor were Sony's specific findings from running PlayStation Stars disclosed.

Launched in July 2022, PlayStation Stars aimed to reward PS5 owners with points that had real cash value, earned through spending on the PlayStation Store and completing various tasks such as surveys or engaging with different games and system features. The program competed with Microsoft's Xbox Rewards, and both have evolved over time to become less rewarding for users.

Last summer, PlayStation Stars faced a month-long service outage. Subsequently, in October, Sony introduced changes, including reducing the points expiration period from 24 to 12 months and excluding PlayStation Plus membership from points-eligible purchases. Now, the entire program is set to be discontinued.
