Pokémon GO: Device Support Updates for Enhanced Gameplay
Pokemon GO to Drop Support for Older Android Devices in 2025
Pokemon GO players using older Android devices face an upcoming challenge. Two updates, scheduled for March and June 2025, will end support for 32-bit Android devices, rendering the game unplayable on affected phones. Players are urged to safeguard their login credentials and upgrade their devices to maintain access.
This change affects older Android models, but the significant player base may find this disruptive. Pokemon GO, a popular augmented reality game, boasts millions of active players despite its age (launched July 2016). While peak player numbers were significantly higher in its first year, the game remains a considerable force in the mobile gaming market.
Niantic, the developer, aims to optimize the game's performance on modern devices, leading to the discontinuation of support for 32-bit Androids. An official announcement on January 9th detailed the upcoming changes. The first update (March 2025) impacts specific Android devices downloaded from the Samsung Galaxy Store. The second (June 2025) directly affects 32-bit Android devices obtained via Google Play.
While a complete list of affected devices hasn't been provided, Niantic confirmed that 64-bit Android devices and all iPhones will remain compatible. A partial list of incompatible devices includes:
- Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, J3
- Sony Xperia Z2, Z3
- Motorola Moto G (1st generation)
- LG Fortune, Tribute
- OnePlus One
- HTC One (M8)
- ZTE Overture 3
- Several Android devices released before 2015
Players on affected devices should save their login details. While they can regain access after upgrading their phones, they will be temporarily locked out, including any purchased Pokecoins.
Despite this setback for some players, 2025 promises significant developments within the broader Pokemon franchise. The release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A is anticipated, along with rumored remakes of Pokemon Black and White and a potential new Let's Go title. Further details regarding Pokemon GO's future may be revealed during a rumored Pokemon Presents showcase on February 27th.
