Next Pokemon Presents Event May Be Disappointing for Switch 2
Don't expect any Switch 2 Pokemon game announcements at the upcoming Pokemon Presents on February 27th. While leaks suggest an imminent Switch 2 reveal, Pokemon titles will reportedly remain exclusive to the original Switch for the foreseeable future. The February 27th event will likely focus on Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
Nintendo's next-generation console, the Switch 2 (unofficially named), remains unannounced, though its existence and backward compatibility with the original Switch are confirmed. Details, however, are largely based on leaks describing a more powerful, larger iteration of the original Switch.
While future Pokemon games are destined for the Switch 2, insider information points to the February 27th Pokemon Presents showcasing titles developed for the original Switch—all of which will, of course, be playable on the Switch 2 thanks to backward compatibility. This includes updates on ongoing live-service titles like Pokemon GO and Pokemon Trading Card Game Live, as well as anticipated news on Pokemon Legends: Z-A, slated for release on the original Switch this year. This latter title's teaser trailer hinted at a Lumiose City setting, returning Pokemon, and the return of Mega Evolutions.
Rumors also circulate about a further main-series Pokemon game release this year, separate from Legends: Z-A and the Generation 10 games. Speculation leans towards Pokemon Black and White remakes or a new Let's Go installment, both allegedly destined for the original Switch, not the Switch 2. If accurate, this suggests the first Switch 2-exclusive main-series Pokemon games will likely be the Generation 10 titles.
This strategy aligns with the franchise's historical preference for leveraging larger install bases on established hardware. Recall the release of Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 on the original DS, rather than the 3DS. Until official confirmation, fans should tune into the February 27th Pokemon Presents for definitive news.
