Potter's Mobile Era Vanishes: "Magic Awakened" EOS Announcement

Dec 17,24

NetEase's collectible card game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in select regions. The end-of-service (EOS) date for the Americas, Europe, and Oceania is October 29th, 2024. Players in Asia and some MENA regions can continue playing.

Initially released in China in September 2021 and globally on June 27th, 2023, the game enjoyed early success but ultimately failed to maintain momentum. While its Clash Royale-inspired gameplay and Hogwarts atmosphere initially resonated with players, criticism mounted over a perceived shift towards pay-to-win mechanics. A controversial reward system overhaul reportedly slowed progression for free-to-play players, contributing to the game's decline.

The game has already been removed from app stores in affected regions as of August 26th, 2024. Despite its initial promise, the decision to shut down reflects the game's inability to sustain a player base in the face of evolving player expectations and in-game economy concerns. For those in unaffected regions, the game remains available.
