Announcing Ananta: The Formerly Known as Project Mugen Open-World RPG

Remember Project Mugen, the anticipated urban open-world RPG from Naked Rain and NetEase? It's undergone a name change, and is now officially known as Ananta.

First revealed at Gamescom 2023, Ananta (formerly Project Mugen) has finally released a new trailer after a lengthy silence. More information is promised on December 5th, but for now, enjoy the official trailer:

The Reason Behind the Name Change?

The developers haven't yet commented on the rebranding. Interestingly, both "Ananta" (Sanskrit for infinite) and "Mugen" (Japanese for infinite) share the same core meaning, a sentiment reflected in the game's Chinese title.

The gaming community is divided on the name change, but universally relieved the project hasn't been canceled. Comparisons are already being drawn with Hotta Studio's upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness. While Ananta's trailer is visually impressive, the lack of gameplay footage gives Neverness to Everness a perceived advantage for some players. Personally, I find Ananta's aesthetic more captivating.

A Curious Turn of Events

Adding to the intrigue, the Project Mugen team has deactivated all their original social media accounts, including a YouTube channel boasting over 100,000 subscribers and millions of views. Only their Discord server remains, simply renamed to reflect the title change. This complete social media overhaul has left many players puzzled, as a simple renaming of existing accounts would have seemed a simpler solution.

In Ananta, players assume the role of an Infinite Trigger, a supernatural investigator confronting paranormal threats. The cast includes characters like Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila.
