The dark fantasy genre has carved its own niche, largely by offering an alternative to more family-friendly, lighthearted styles. Yet, truly mainstream MMORPGs in this vein remain rare. That's what makes Netmarble's Raven2 such an exciting prospect—it's positioning itself as a grimdark counterpart to World of Warcraft.

Just a heads-up: don't anticipate the realism and grit of Game of Thrones. Despite the brooding, shadowy environments and equally hard-bitten characters, this is unmistakably an MMORPG. You'll find exaggeratedly large weapons and armor, plus grand, sprawling cities and landscapes to match.

While it may not reach Elden Ring's intensity, Raven2 delivers a surface-level brutality that should satisfy players craving more substance. And as a Netmarble title, it naturally offers a wide selection of classes and abilities to tear through foes.

A Hint of Grit in the Grimdark

Raven2 is clearly a polished production, but its identity feels somewhat conflicted. Scantily clad sorceresses and superhuman warriors don't exactly evoke Michael Moorcock or even Robert E. Howard, regardless of which dark fantasy you favor.

That said, if you move past the marketing, there's certainly a sharper edge to Raven2. Whether that translates into gameplay, however, is another question. Keep an eye out for its release this October so you can decide for yourself!
