Ridley Scott Steps Back from Alien Franchise: Hopes for Future Expansion

Jun 26,25

Legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott has officially moved on from the *Alien* franchise, stating in a recent interview with ScreenRant that he believes he's contributed enough to the iconic sci-fi series. At 87 years old, the acclaimed English director—who first introduced audiences to the terrifying world of *Alien* back in 1979 and later revived the saga with 2012’s *Prometheus*—explained his decision by saying, “Where it’s going now, I think I’ve done enough, and I just hope it goes further.”

Scott leaves behind a strong legacy and an equally promising future for the franchise. Recent success stories include Fede Álvarez’s *Alien: Romulus*, which performed so well that a sequel is already in development. Additionally, Noah Hawley, known for creating the hit series *Fargo*, is set to bring *Alien: Earth* to FX, expanding the universe even further through television. The ripple effects of the *Alien* mythos are also evident in upcoming projects like *Predator: Badlands*, which includes several crossover references.

Reviving a Sci-Fi Legacy

PlayIn the same interview, Scott reflected on how the *Alien* series lost momentum after *Alien: Resurrection* in 1997, which ultimately inspired him to reboot the franchise with *Prometheus*. After *Prometheus*, he continued the story with 2017’s *Alien: Covenant*, setting the stage for *Alien: Romulus*, released last year.

“I think I felt it was deadened after 4,” Scott explained. “I think mine was pretty damn good, and I think Jim's [James Cameron, director of *Aliens*] was good, and I have to say the rest were not very good. And I thought, ‘F***, that's the end of a franchise which should be as important as bloody Star Trek or Star Wars,’ which I think is phenomenal.”

He went on to explain his motivation behind bringing the franchise back into the spotlight: “A number of years after, I said, ‘I'm going to resurrect this,’ and wrote *Prometheus* from scratch — a blank sheet of paper. Damon Lindelof and I sat down and hammered out *Prometheus*. It was very present and very welcome. The audience really wanted more. I said, ‘It needs to fly.’ No one was coming for it, and I went once again and made *Alien: Covenant*, and it worked too. Where it's going now, I think I've done enough, and I just hope it goes further.”

Although Scott has ruled out directing another *Alien* film himself, his influence continues through production credits. He served as a producer on *Alien: Romulus* and remains an executive producer on *Alien: Earth* under his Scott Free Productions banner. Fans of the series will be particularly excited to see where *Alien: Earth* takes the story, especially after the release of its first full trailer, which offered plenty of intriguing hints about what’s to come.
