Rosario Dawson Surprised by Mark Hamill's Return as Luke Skywalker on 'The Mandalorian' Set - Star Wars Celebration
Mark Hamill's surprise appearance as Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian remains a monumental moment in Star Wars history. At Star Wars Celebration, Rosario Dawson shared her astonishment at not being informed about Hamill's cameo until he unexpectedly appeared on the set of The Book of Boba Fett.
Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, the masterminds behind the series, cleverly used Jedi Master Plo Koon as a decoy to keep Luke's cameo under wraps. They also recounted the amusing tale of how Dawson was caught off guard, revealing a significant oversight in their communication.
To maintain the secrecy of Luke Skywalker's appearance, the scripts used Plo Koon as a stand-in, a tactic that extended to Dawson as well. She expressed her confusion upon reading about Plo Koon's supposed return in the script for The Book of Boba Fett, especially since fans knew Plo Koon met his demise in Revenge of the Sith.
"I was like... I don't know... but people disappear and then they come back, so maybe it's possible?" Dawson remarked. Her surprise was complete when Mark Hamill showed up on set. "He even said, 'Plo Koon? That wouldn't even make sense!' and I'm like, 'I know it didn't make sense, but I still had to think it made sense because I got the script and everything!'"
Favreau and Filoni expressed their regret over the miscommunication, with Favreau admitting, "That was bad on us!" Filoni added with a chuckle, "We were in it so much. I think we assumed you'd gotten told the right information."
Favreau highlighted the intense secrecy surrounding two major reveals on the show: Grogu's appearance at the end of the first episode and Luke Skywalker's at the end of season two. "We were biting our nails all the way through, and we somehow miraculously made it cleanly to both of those because everything else leaked. But, unfortunately, we didn't fill in our partner here," he explained.
Dawson took the oversight in stride, humorously noting, "I love it, they know I can't be trusted."
