Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Exclusion from Avengers, X-Men

May 25,25

Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the chances of Deadpool joining either the Avengers or the X-Men, suggesting that such a move would signify the character's "end." Despite the success of Deadpool & Wolverine and Deadpool's on-screen desire to join the Avengers, Reynolds believes that becoming part of these teams would be too much of a "wish fulfillment" for the character.

The recent cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday included a strong presence of veteran X-Men actors, such as Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden. This has led to speculation that Avengers: Doomsday might secretly be an Avengers vs. X-Men movie. Grammer, who played Beast in the Fox X-Men franchise, debuted in the MCU via The Marvels' post-credits scene, while Stewart briefly appeared as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. McKellen, Cumming, Romijn, and Marsden have yet to make their MCU debuts.

Despite the extensive list of stars confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, Reynolds' name was noticeably absent. Channing Tatum, who played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, is set to appear in the film. Reynolds' comments to Time magazine suggest that a formal promotion to the Avengers or X-Men is unlikely for Deadpool. However, he hinted at the possibility of a surprise cameo, drawing parallels to the positive reception of Wesley Snipes' cameo as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine.

As for Deadpool's future, Reynolds is currently working on a new project that involves an "ensemble," though he remained vague about the details. He emphasized his preference for Deadpool to remain somewhat isolated. This could mean another Deadpool movie with a focus on cameos, potentially involving characters like Snipes' Blade, Tatum's Gambit, Jennifer Garner's Elektra, and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23.

Regarding Avengers: Doomsday, details beyond the cast list remain uncertain. Anthony Mackie, who will reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, expressed optimism about the film, stating it would recapture "that old Marvel feeling." Other cast members, including Paul Rudd as Ant-Man and Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch, have also shared their excitement. A leaked set photo from Avengers: Doomsday has sparked further speculation and concern among fans about the fate of the X-Men.

There's also buzz about Oscar Isaac potentially appearing as Moon Knight in Avengers: Doomsday, fueled by his withdrawal from Star Wars Celebration due to scheduling conflicts. Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige confirmed that the Avengers livestream did not reveal the entire cast of Doomsday, hinting at more surprises to come.
