Reynolds Pitches R-Rated Star Wars to Disney

Ryan Reynolds reveals he proposed an R-rated Star Wars concept to Disney, though its production status remains uncertain.

The Deadpool star discussed his non-Marvel ventures during an appearance on The Box Office Podcast. While remaining tight-lipped about whether Disney greenlit the pitch or its format (film vs. series), he offered insights into his creative vision for such a project.

"I approached Disney with the idea of developing an R-rated Star Wars spinoff," Reynolds explained. "It wouldn't necessarily focus on mainstream characters - there's a wealth of possibilities within that universe. An R-rating isn't about shock value; it's a vehicle for raw emotional storytelling. I've never understood why studios hesitate to take these creative risks."

Reynolds boasts an impressive track record with R-rated films, having spearheaded three of the top five highest-grossing R-rated movies ever: the Deadpool franchise and Deadpool & Wolverine. The latter, co-starring Hugh Jackman, currently holds the record as the highest-earning R-rated film worldwide with over $1.3 billion (per Box Office Mojo).

"I'm not suggesting I'd want to appear in it - that wouldn't be appropriate."

While Reynolds remains uncertain whether this success could translate to Star Wars, the concept clearly intrigues him. However, he envisions contributing creatively rather than appearing on-screen.

"My interest lies in producing and writing, working behind the scenes," Reynolds clarified. "Star Wars thrives on strategic surprises. While streaming reduces scarcity, there's still ample opportunity to innovate within this beloved universe."

Reynolds continues his Marvel journey despite reservations about Deadpool joining the Avengers. Reports suggest he's been advocating for a Deadpool/X-Men crossover behind the scenes.

As for Star Wars, fans may wait years for Reynolds' vision to materialize. For updates on Disney's galactic expansion, attention turns to Star Wars: Starfighter - a project helmed by Reynolds' frequent collaborator Shawn Levy. While details remain scarce, casting confirmation includes Barbie star Ryan Gosling.
