San Francisco 49ers Issue Statement on Dr Disrespect Situation

Jan 21,25

The San Francisco 49ers have severed ties with controversial streamer Dr Disrespect following his admission to sending inappropriate messages to a minor on Twitch. This is the latest in a series of sponsors abandoning the streamer after details surrounding his 2020 Twitch ban emerged.

On June 21st, former Twitch executive Cody Conners alleged Dr Disrespect, whose real name is Herschel "Guy" Beahm IV, was banned for "sexting a minor" via Twitch Whispers. Initially, Dr Disrespect denied wrongdoing. However, on June 25th, he reversed his stance, acknowledging sending "inappropriate" messages to a minor.

49ers End Relationship with Dr Disrespect

In light of this admission, the San Francisco 49ers, valued at an estimated $6 billion, announced they would no longer work with Dr Disrespect. A spokesperson stated, "We take these developments seriously and will not be working with him going forward," according to Digiday. This represents the largest sponsorship loss for the streamer stemming from this controversy. While the exact financial contribution is unknown, Dr Disrespect had a significant relationship with the 49ers, featuring in marketing campaigns and even announcing their draft pick, Tyrion Davis-Price, in 2022.

This abrupt end to his association with the team, a lifelong favorite, mirrors his unceremonious departure from Twitch in 2020. The 49ers are not alone in distancing themselves from the 42-year-old content creator. Turtle Beach, a gaming accessory manufacturer, and Midnight Society, a game development company he co-founded in 2021, have also terminated their partnerships.

"We take these developments seriously and will not be working with [Dr Disrespect] going forward."

Several past sponsors, including Mountain Dew (who confirmed they haven't worked with him for some time), have indicated they have no plans for future collaborations.

Prior to these sponsorship losses, Dr Disrespect announced a streaming hiatus, stating in a June 25th statement his intention to return to content creation soon.
