Simu Liu Confirms Return for Avengers: Doomsday Amid Marvel's Secrecy
Simu Liu is officially set to reprise his role as Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming ensemble film, Avengers: Doomsday. The announcement came during a major livestream event, where Liu’s name appeared alongside other MCU icons on a chair, though Marvel Studios’ strict anti-spoiler policy kept him tight-lipped about his involvement.
The recent Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal spotlighted several veteran X-Men actors, including Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden, confirming a significant X-Men presence in the film. Grammer, known for portraying Beast in the Fox X-Men series, made his MCU debut in The Marvels’ post-credits scene. Stewart, who played Charles Xavier/Professor X, had a brief MCU appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as an Illuminati member. McKellen (Magneto), Cumming (Nightcrawler), Romijn (Mystique), and Marsden (Cyclops) have yet to debut in the MCU, raising speculation: could Avengers: Doomsday be an Avengers vs. X-Men showdown?
“I knew I’d be part of it in some way,” Liu shared during a recent interview on the Jennifer Hudson Show. “But I had no idea who else was being announced. Marvel keeps everything under wraps. Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo spoiled things for everyone, so now they tell us nothing.”
Liu was referring to the well-known leaks from Holland about the MCU’s Spider-Man films and Ruffalo’s tendency to reveal Avengers plot details. Following these high-profile slip-ups, Marvel has tightened its spoiler policy, keeping both veteran and new cast members in the dark to prevent leaks.
Liu, also recognized for his role as a Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, expressed awe at the casting of industry legends. “When I saw Sir Ian and Sir Patrick announced,” he said during the interview, “I was floored. They’re among the greatest actors to ever grace the screen.”
Liu debuted as Shang-Chi in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in 2021, but the character has yet to reappear on screen. With a release date of May 1, 2026, and a star-studded cast, Avengers: Doomsday remains largely enigmatic, though more details are expected to emerge in the coming year, with or without spoilers.
Meanwhile, MCU fans are abuzz over Robert Downey Jr.’s recent Doctor Doom-themed invitation for his 60th birthday celebration, sparking curiosity about his return to the franchise.
