Sony Has Good News and Bad News on PlayStation 5 Themes

Sony has announced an update regarding the limited-time classic PlayStation console themes for PS5, covering PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4. These beloved themes, which added nostalgic imagery and sounds from past PlayStation consoles to the PS5 interface, are departing tomorrow, January 31st, 2025. However, Sony assures fans they will return in the coming months, following a positive response to their initial release.

"Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow," Sony stated. "Due to the positive response on these 4 themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead.”

While the return of the themes is welcome news, Sony also clarified that there are currently no plans to create additional console themes beyond these four. They stated, “While there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future, we're excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all.”

This announcement has met with some fan disappointment, as the PS5 notably lacks the extensive theme customization options available on previous PlayStation consoles. The temporary themes, released in celebration of PlayStation's 30th anniversary on December 3rd, 2024, offered a unique way to personalize the PS5 home screen and menus, incorporating iconic visual elements and sounds from the PSOne (classic console background), PS2 (menu shapes), PS3 (wave background), and PS4 (wave patterns).
