Splitgate Sequel Announced: Halo-Meets-Portal Shooter Returns
1047 Games, the masterminds behind the beloved 2019 multiplayer FPS Splitgate, are back with a thrilling sequel. Get ready to jump into the action with the Sol Splitgate League in Splitgate 2.
Splitgate 2 Launches in 2025
Familiar yet Fresh
On July 18, 1047 Games unveiled a cinematic announcement trailer for Splitgate 2, the eagerly awaited follow-up to the free-to-play shooter that captivated gamers worldwide upon its 2019 release.CEO Ian Proulx shared that their vision was to "build a game that can last a decade or more." While the original game drew inspiration from classic arena shooters, the team recognized the need to "develop tools for a deep and satisfying gameplay loop" to create a modern, enduring game.
Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing at 1047 Games, emphasized their new approach to portals, stating, "we rethought our approach to portals, hoping to ensure true Portal Gods could excel, but that no one had to constantly portal to taste victory."
While details on Splitgate 2's gameplay are still under wraps, the developers have confirmed that the game will be built on Unreal Engine 5, remain free-to-play, and introduce a "faction system." Although some familiar elements will return, "Splitgate 2 should look and feel completely fresh from the original."
Mark your calendars: Splitgate 2 is set to launch in 2025 across PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
Often described as "Halo meets Portal," Splitgate is an arena PvP first-person shooter where players can create wormholes between two points to navigate maps strategically.
The original game skyrocketed in popularity after founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian released a demo, garnering around 600,000 downloads in just one month. The game's initial success was so overwhelming that servers had to be taken offline to expand their capacity.
Splitgate was in early access for several years before its official release on September 15, 2022. At that time, the studio announced they would stop updating the original game to focus on "building the game fans deserve," hinting at "revolutionary, not evolutionary, changes" for a new game in the Splitgate universe.
New Characters, Maps, Factions
The trailer introduced the Sol Splitgate League and unveiled three distinct factions that "add more depth to the gameplay experience."
According to the game's Steam page, each faction offers a unique playstyle. Joining Aeros lets you "dash around the battlefield," while choosing Meridian allows you to "control the chaos with tactical and time-manipulating abilities." If you prefer a more direct approach, you can "run in guns blazing with Sabrask’s raw power."
While the specifics of how these factions will impact gameplay remain undisclosed, it's confirmed that "Splitgate 2 is not a hero shooter" like Overwatch or Valorant.
Fans eager for gameplay footage will need to wait until Gamescom 2024, from August 21 to 25. However, the trailer has already sparked excitement, with the developers assuring that it's "an amazing representation of what you'll experience in Splitgate 2." They confirmed, "yes, those are real maps. Yes, those are real Splitgate 2 weapons. Yes, that is a trail following you out of a portal. And yes, I’m telling you, in the house of Halo, that dual wielding was always awesome, so we brought it back."
Splitgate 2 Comics
While Splitgate 2 won't feature a single-player campaign, fans can delve into the game's lore through a mobile companion app. This app offers comics, character cards, and more, including a quiz to help you discover which faction aligns best with your playstyle.
