Star Wars Movie From Deadpool & Wolverine Director Could Star Ryan Gosling

Feb 27,25

Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool & Wolverine, is reportedly on the verge of joining the Star Wars universe, bringing Ryan Gosling along for the ride.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy's Star Wars film is in negotiations with Gosling to take a leading role. Levy has been developing this project since 2022, with a script finalized last year. He's re-teaming with Jonathan Tropper, screenwriter of This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both Levy-directed films.

Plot details remain tightly under wraps, with no confirmation on Gosling's character or the film's historical placement within the Star Wars timeline. What is known is that the story is separate from the Skywalker Saga. The Hollywood Reporter also indicates the film is intended as a standalone project, ruling out a planned trilogy.

Gosling's potential involvement has accelerated the film's progress. While Levy was previously slated to direct a boy band movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, THR reports that Gosling's confirmation would likely expedite production, making this Star Wars film Levy's next project, with a fall production start anticipated.

Star Wars is currently in a period of transition. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney+ recently concluded its latest series, Skeleton Crew. On the film front, Dave Filoni's Mandalorian and Grogu movie completed filming in December, targeting a May 22, 2026 release. A new trilogy focusing on Daisy Ridley's Rey is also in the works.

A release date for Levy's Star Wars film remains unannounced, pending its progression this year. For a comprehensive overview of upcoming Star Wars content, consult our 2025 preview.
