New Patent For Joy-Con Shows Mouse Support

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

The eagerly anticipated Switch 2 introduces innovative features for its Joy-Con, including the much-talked-about mouse support. On February 6, 2025, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a patent filed by Nintendo, shedding light on the new capabilities of the Switch 2's Joy-Con.

The patent details the Joy-Con's mouse-like functionality, which was hinted at in the Switch 2 reveal trailer. The trailer showcased the controller being dragged across a flat surface, suggesting its potential use as a mouse. This patent confirms the rumors and adds an exciting dimension to the Switch 2's controller capabilities, despite Nintendo's usual secrecy surrounding the console.

Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers

The Switch 2's Joy-Con retains the detachable design familiar from the original Nintendo Switch, but with a significant new feature: the ability to function as a mouse. According to the patent, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."

In addition to the mouse functionality, the Joy-Con can be charged using a new dock that supports up to two Joy-Cons simultaneously. A new magnetic attachment connects the Joy-Con to the console and includes a wrist strap, similar to the original Joy-Con. The patent also introduces a new pair of controllers, resembling a split standard controller, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse-like operation. These can be combined into a standard controller using a separate attachment.

It's important to note that the features outlined in the patent may not all make it to the final product, as Nintendo has yet to officially confirm the Joy-Con's functionalities or any related attachments for the Switch 2.
