Switch 2: Worth the Hype?

The Nintendo Switch 2 has finally arrived, but does it justify upgrading from its predecessor? What improvements set it apart? How does backwards compatibility perform? Find all the answers in our comprehensive review.
Nintendo Switch 2 Review
The Evolution of Nintendo's Hybrid Console

After two weeks of testing the Nintendo Switch 2, we're examining whether this successor lives up to its groundbreaking predecessor. The original Switch revolutionized gaming with its hybrid design, seamlessly transitioning between home console and portable gameplay. This innovative approach became so influential that competitors quickly adopted similar concepts.
Anticipation for the Switch 2 reached fever pitch through years of speculation. Some predicted a dual-screen design inspired by the Nintendo DS, while others envisioned a more powerful dock unit. The reality proves more conservative yet effectively refined.
Our testing confirms significant quality-of-life improvements while maintaining the core Switch experience. We've evaluated comfort enhancements, Joy-Con refinements, and performance boosts for original Switch games across all play modes.
Switch 2 Design & Ergonomics

The Switch 2 immediately feels familiar yet substantially improved. While retaining the iconic form factor, its premium matte finish offers superior grip and a more substantial feel. The increased weight (534g vs original's 398g) provides a reassuring heft without becoming unwieldy.
Compared to previous Nintendo handhelds like the 3DS family (336g) or even the Wii U GamePad (491g), the Switch 2 demonstrates impressive engineering - packing more powerful hardware into a sleek chassis that remains lighter than competitors like Steam Deck.

The redesigned console features thoughtful upgrades: a sturdy U-shaped kickstand replaces the original's flimsy design, while dual USB-C ports (top and bottom) improve connectivity. The refined dock includes Ethernet support and enhanced cooling.

Like its predecessor, the Switch 2 isn't truly pocket-friendly. Its larger dimensions (half-inch taller and inch wider than original) require dedicated carrying solutions. While the console ships with a basic screen protector, we strongly recommend upgrading to tempered glass for better scratch protection given its portable nature.
