When Can You Switch Between Naoe and Yasuke in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?
Assassin's Creed: Shadow's dual protagonists, the Shinobi Naoe and the Samurai Yasuke, are a major draw, but the timing of when you can freely switch between them might be unclear. This guide clarifies when and how to control each character.
While Assassin's Creed: Shadows boasts a vast open world, the early game is linear. The approximately 90-minute prologue alternates between Naoe and Yasuke. Post-prologue, you're initially locked into playing as Naoe for several hours. Don't expect to immediately play as Yasuke; he remains absent until the "Temple of the Horseman" quest. He then becomes briefly playable in the "Fire and Lightning" quest. Full protagonist switching freedom unlocks after completing these quests and Act I.
How Long Until You Can Switch Protagonists in Assassin's Creed: Shadows?
Completing Act I and unlocking free switching took approximately 10 hours in one playthrough, including significant side content. A faster playthrough focused solely on the main story could likely achieve this in 6-8 hours.
How to Switch Between Yasuke and Naoe in Assassin's Creed: Shadows
Once Act I is finished, switching is straightforward. Fast traveling offers two options: fast travel as your current character or as the other. Selecting the latter instantly switches characters at your chosen destination. This works at various locations, including synchronization points and Kakurega Hideouts. Certain story quests also provide the option to choose which protagonist to play as.
When Can You *Not* Switch Protagonists in Assassin's Creed: Shadows?
While post-Act I offers significant freedom, certain story moments and major quests lock you into a specific character. Remember that character-specific quests and activities exist, marked by a Samurai helmet for Yasuke and a Shinobi hood for Naoe, ensuring each character's backstory is fully explored.
Assassin's Creed: Shadows is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
