SwitchArcade Special: 10 GBA/DS Games Released on Nintendo Switch
A Fresh Look at Retro Gaming on the Nintendo Switch: GBA and DS Gems
This time, we're taking a slightly different approach to exploring retro games on the Nintendo Switch. The selection of Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available isn't as extensive as on some other platforms. That said, while the Nintendo Switch Online app boasts a strong Game Boy Advance library, we're focusing on titles available on the Switch eShop. Here are ten favorites – four GBA and six DS games – presented without any particular ranking.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a special place in many hearts, this GBA adaptation is a solid experience. It's a fun comparison piece and offers a streamlined gameplay experience. Steel Empire is an enjoyable title, even for those who aren't usually fans of the genre.
Mega Man Zero – Included in Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series on home consoles began to lose its footing, a worthy successor emerged on the GBA: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an excellent series of side-scrolling action games. Though the initial entry has some rough edges, these are smoothed out in later installments. Start here and enjoy the ride!
Mega Man Battle Network – Included in Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
Yes, another Mega Man entry! Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer vastly different gameplay experiences, and both excel in their respective styles. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries in this series saw diminishing returns, the original remains a highly enjoyable title.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but if we had to choose a standout, Aria of Sorrow takes the crown. For many, it's even preferred over the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is incredibly addictive. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its charm, making it a top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
Shantae initially gained cult status, but its limited distribution hampered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, released on DSiWare, propelled the Half-Genie Hero into the spotlight. Its success ensured Shantae's continued presence across console generations. Interestingly, this title's origins trace back to an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Included in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
While technically originating on the GBA (though initially unlocalized), Ace Attorney deserves a spot on this list. These adventure games combine investigations with dramatic courtroom scenes and humorous storytelling. The first game sets a high bar, though later installments are also highly regarded.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick boasts equally strong writing and a unique gameplay mechanic. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the truth about your own death. This wild ride is a must-play, and Capcom deserves praise for its continued support of this title.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
The World Ends With You is a top-tier Nintendo DS game. While the original's tight integration with the DS hardware makes it hard to replicate perfectly, the Switch version is a great alternative for those who don't have access to a DS. This game is exceptional in every aspect.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection brings together all the Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are worth playing, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the updated button controls replacing the original touch controls. However, all three DS entries in this collection are fantastic.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Included in Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
The Etrian Odyssey series is intrinsically linked to the DS/3DS ecosystem, but Atlus has successfully adapted Etrian Odyssey III. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, and Etrian Odyssey III, being the largest, is a rewarding experience despite its complexities.
