Take-Two Boss Says It's 'Shown a Willingness to Support Legacy Titles' Amid Questions About the Future of GTA Online Post-GTA 6
The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know
The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their beloved game. With GTA Online's continued success and profitability, the question of whether it will be replaced or simply updated is paramount. Will players' investments of time and money be rendered obsolete?
Rockstar's decision to prioritize GTA Online over story DLC for GTA 5 has already sparked controversy. The possibility of a "GTA Online 2" or a significant overhaul of the existing platform raises concerns about the future of current player progress and investments. Should players continue investing in the current GTA Online, knowing a new version might launch within months?
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed this during a recent interview, offering insight through the analogy of NBA 2K Online. NBA 2K Online and its sequel, NBA 2K Online 2, coexisted successfully, both remaining active and supported. Zelnick stated, "Generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles." He highlighted the continued support of NBA 2K Online even after the release of its sequel, emphasizing a willingness to maintain legacy titles with active communities.
While Zelnick avoided specific comments on GTA Online's future due to the lack of official announcements, his remarks suggest that a potential GTA Online 2 wouldn't necessarily mean the immediate abandonment of the original. Continued player engagement, he implied, would warrant continued support for the existing platform.
However, much about GTA 6 remains unknown. With only a trailer and a release window confirmed, Rockstar needs to provide more details soon, especially considering the proximity of the speculated release date to other anticipated game launches like Borderlands 4. Until then, the question of GTA Online's future remains unanswered, leaving players in a state of anticipation.
