Tencent Targets Western Audience with Arthurian Knights in Tides of Annihilation
In an insightful interview with Wccftech, the developers of Tides of Annihilation from Eclipse Glow Games delved into the game's unique concept and its appeal to Western audiences. Here's a closer look at what they shared about the game's setting, gameplay, and future plans.
Tides of Annihilation Aims For A Western Audience
The Central Concept Of Arthurian Myths And Knights
During Gamescom 2024, Eclipse Glow Games, a China-based studio, discussed their strategic choice of setting for Tides of Annihilation. Funded by Tencent, the game diverges from the typical Eastern themes seen in projects like Black Myth: Wukong, which targets the Chinese market. Instead, Tides of Annihilation is crafted with a Western audience in mind, drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of Arthurian legends.
The game's producer envisioned a narrative centered around knights, which evolved into the iconic King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Set in a post-apocalyptic modern-day London, the game follows the journey of Gwendolyn, the last human survivor amidst an Outworld invasion. This setting blends contemporary elements with fantasy, directly inspired by Arthurian myths.
Devil May Cry-inspired Combat And Over 30 Bosses
Tides of Annihilation's combat system is a nod to the beloved Devil May Cry series, offering a familiar yet accessible experience. The developers emphasized that while the combat is "definitely more like Devil May Cry," they've included a difficulty selection feature to cater to a broader range of players. This approach makes the game welcoming to both seasoned action-RPG enthusiasts and newcomers.
Players can customize their combat style with four weapons and over ten different Knights to command as sidekicks. Gwendolyn, the protagonist, discovers her ability to summon the legendary Knights of the Round Table, who aid her in navigating the ruins of London and uncovering the truth behind the invasion. With over 30 unique bosses to challenge, the game promises engaging and varied gameplay.
Plans Of Creating An Anthology
Looking ahead, Eclipse Glow Games expressed their ambition to expand Tides of Annihilation into an anthology series. They aim to explore different settings and mythologies, each potentially featuring a new protagonist. The core concept of an Outworld invasion would remain a unifying theme across these future titles.
The success of the initial game is crucial for realizing this vision. The team is optimistic about the game's potential and hopes to bring more mythologies and stories to life through this series.
Tides of Annihilation is currently in its beta phase, with a planned release in 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Players will join Gwendolyn on her quest to save not only London but also the intertwined fantasy realm of Avalon.
