Is Bucky Barnes Responsible for Emperor Doom's Rise?

"Thunderbolts: Doomstrike" builds upon Kelly and Lanzing's 2023 "Thunderbolts" relaunch. Bucky Barnes leads a team tasked with confronting major Marvel villains, employing any necessary means. Their victories against Hydra and the Kingpin, however, inadvertently paved the path for Doom's ascent.

Lanzing explains, "Bucky eliminated the Red Skull, crippled Kingpin's finances, and destabilized the US government. This was meant to improve global safety and inspire other heroes. Instead, it emboldened Victor Von Doom, whom Bucky used as a tool."

Kelly reveals that the "Worldstrike" storyline was always intended to lead to a Doom-focused sequel. The company-wide "One World Under Doom" crossover was a fortuitous alignment.

"We learned about 'One World Under Doom,' spearheaded by Ryan North. To our surprise, Bucky's manipulation of Doom was a pivotal event in his rise to power. 'Doomstrike' is Bucky's chance at redemption, but it will push him to his limits."

Bucky's guilt over Doom's rise is central to "Doomstrike." Kelly notes that guilt has been a constant in Bucky's narrative since his resurrection as the Winter Soldier.

"Bucky's guilt, stemming from his Winter Soldier past and Outer Circle missions, has weighed heavily on him. Just as he thought he'd overcome it, he's burdened with the responsibility for Doom's power. Doom will exploit this guilt."

Lanzing discusses the varied motivations of the Thunderbolts team: Songbird acts out of loyalty to Bucky; Black Widow prioritizes Bucky's safety; Sharon Carter fights fascism; U.S. Agent is disillusioned; and Ghost Rider '44, an old friend of Bucky's, re-enters the fray.

Regarding Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Kelly teases, "That's a complex question best answered by reading issue #1."

Thunderbolts vs. Thunderbolts

"Doomstrike" features the return of the original 1997 Thunderbolts, most of whom now serve Emperor Doom. The clash between Bucky's team and Doom's is a key plot point.
