2025: A Marvel Universe Under Doom's Reign

The Marvel Universe in 2025 is defined by one word: "Doom." February marks the launch of "One World Under Doom," a major crossover event. Doctor Doom, the newly crowned Sorcerer Supreme, claims global dominion. This narrative unfolds in Ryan North and R.B. Silva's "One World Under Doom" miniseries and numerous tie-in titles. A key tie-in is "Thunderbolts: Doomstrike," penned by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, with art by Tommaso Bianchi.

IGN presents an exclusive preview of "Thunderbolts: Doomstrike" #3 (April release). The official synopsis teases a thrilling confrontation: "Bucky, Songbird, Sharon Carter, and the Midnight Angels devise a daring plan to target Doom's vibranium supply. But they face an unexpected obstacle – THE THUNDERBOLTS! It's THUNDERBOLTS VS. THUNDERBOLTS!"

The slideshow below showcases the preview. Further details from Kelly and Lanzing reveal the series' significance, particularly as the culmination of a long-running Bucky Barnes storyline.

Is Bucky Barnes Responsible for Emperor Doom's Rise?

"Thunderbolts: Doomstrike" builds upon Kelly and Lanzing's 2023 "Thunderbolts" relaunch. Bucky Barnes leads a team tasked with confronting major Marvel villains, employing any necessary means. Their victories against Hydra and the Kingpin, however, inadvertently paved the path for Doom's ascent.

Lanzing explains, "Bucky eliminated the Red Skull, crippled Kingpin's finances, and destabilized the US government. This was meant to improve global safety and inspire other heroes. Instead, it emboldened Victor Von Doom, whom Bucky used as a tool."

Kelly reveals that the "Worldstrike" storyline was always intended to lead to a Doom-focused sequel. The company-wide "One World Under Doom" crossover was a fortuitous alignment.

"We learned about 'One World Under Doom,' spearheaded by Ryan North. To our surprise, Bucky's manipulation of Doom was a pivotal event in his rise to power. 'Doomstrike' is Bucky's chance at redemption, but it will push him to his limits."

Bucky's guilt over Doom's rise is central to "Doomstrike." Kelly notes that guilt has been a constant in Bucky's narrative since his resurrection as the Winter Soldier.

"Bucky's guilt, stemming from his Winter Soldier past and Outer Circle missions, has weighed heavily on him. Just as he thought he'd overcome it, he's burdened with the responsibility for Doom's power. Doom will exploit this guilt."

Lanzing discusses the varied motivations of the Thunderbolts team: Songbird acts out of loyalty to Bucky; Black Widow prioritizes Bucky's safety; Sharon Carter fights fascism; U.S. Agent is disillusioned; and Ghost Rider '44, an old friend of Bucky's, re-enters the fray.

Regarding Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Kelly teases, "That's a complex question best answered by reading issue #1."

Thunderbolts vs. Thunderbolts

"Doomstrike" features the return of the original 1997 Thunderbolts, most of whom now serve Emperor Doom. The clash between Bucky's team and Doom's is a key plot point.

Kelly highlights the return of the original Thunderbolts, exploring the theme of redemption for villains. Lanzing points out that Doom, not Bucky, controls the Thunderbolts in this new world order.

Songbird's position is crucial, torn between her former teammates and her loyalty to Bucky. Kelly describes her return as stylish and determined, but the conflict will deeply affect her.

"Doomstrike" serves as the culmination of Kelly and Lanzing's long-running Bucky Barnes storyline, spanning "Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty" and "Captain America: Cold War."

Lanzing confirms, "This is our final Bucky Barnes story for now. It's the grand finale of our 'Revolution Saga,' encompassing various titles. Fans of our previous work shouldn't miss this."

Kelly and Lanzing express their hope that "Doomstrike" will attract MCU viewers, given the similarities in the team roster and the upcoming "Thunderbolts" film. They believe the storyline will resonate with fans of both the comics and the MCU.
