Tom Hardy Calls for Stunt Oscar Category

Dec 10,25

Following the announcement that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will finally introduce an Oscar for Stunt Design, actor Tom Hardy has questioned whether a single award category is sufficient.

Speaking with IGN ahead of his new film Havoc's release, Hardy shared: "One Oscar feels a bit too little, too late in some respects. It’s a positive step—glass half full—but I believe more recognition is warranted."

"Stunt design alone doesn’t cover everything, because the stunts department involves so many moving parts," the star of Venom and Mad Max: Fury Road continued. "The design aspect acts as an umbrella for a diverse range of specialties within that field, all of which deserve to be highlighted and appreciated for their hard work. The stunt team, together with special effects, delivers the excitement that audiences seek when they watch anything involving action—or anything beyond dialogue alone. Whether it’s horse riding, car chases, leaps from buildings, fire scenes, fight choreography, vehicles hitting actors, underwater sequences, or skydiving—you name it.

"That entire community often goes unsung. They take significant physical risks, and though their work speaks for itself, they’re the ones who truly add thrill to film and television. I have many friends in that world, so yes, I’d also like to see additional subcategories recognized."

Havoc director Gareth Evans shares this sentiment. Evans, known for helming The Raid films—which feature some of cinema’s most dynamic action and stunt sequences—added his perspective.

"Subcategories would be a welcome addition," Evans noted. "I don’t believe awards drive the craft itself—that would be the wrong motivation. It’s about creative expression within the framework of the film you’re making. But it’s high time this work received recognition, and it’s surprising it wasn’t honored from the very beginning."

It will have taken a full century for the Oscars to establish a category dedicated to stunt design when it debuts at the 2028 Academy Awards. You won’t have to wait nearly as long to see Havoc, however—the film arrives on Netflix this Friday, April 25th, for viewers eager to watch Tom Hardy take on waves of adversaries.
