Joseph Kosinski, renowned for directing Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy, is reportedly set to helm a new Miami Vice movie for Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Dan Gilroy, known for writing and directing Nightcrawler, is tasked with penning the script, building on an initial draft by Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy has recently been involved in scripting multiple episodes of the acclaimed Star Wars series Andor, which was created by his brother, Tony Gilroy.

Miami Vice, an iconic and influential NBC police series, was created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann. The show, which aired for five seasons from 1984 to 1989, starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as detectives Crockett and Tubbs. It's celebrated for revolutionizing television aesthetics, setting new standards for visual and auditory storytelling in TV series.

The series was previously adapted into a film in 2006, directed by Michael Mann and featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in the lead roles.

While details about the new Miami Vice movie are sparse at this point, it's clear that it won't be Kosinski's immediate next project following the release of his film F1 in June. This timeline should afford Kosinski ample opportunity to meticulously plan and prepare for the new adaptation, perhaps even choosing the perfect Ferrari to match the film's iconic style.
