Lenovo's Legion Go S: The First Third-Party SteamOS Handheld

Lenovo has unveiled the Legion Go S, a groundbreaking handheld gaming PC, marking the first third-party device to launch with Valve's SteamOS. This signifies a significant expansion for SteamOS, previously exclusive to the Steam Deck.

The Legion Go S, priced at $499, will debut in May 2025, boasting a 16GB RAM/512GB storage configuration. This SteamOS version offers a smoother, console-like experience compared to Windows-based competitors like the Asus ROG Ally X and MSI Claw 8 AI+, leveraging the optimized Linux-based OS. Valve has been actively pursuing third-party SteamOS adoption, and the Legion Go S represents the culmination of these efforts.

Initially leaked, the Legion Go S's SteamOS variant was confirmed at CES 2025 alongside the Legion Go 2. While the Go 2 is a direct successor to the original Legion Go, the Go S provides comparable power in a more compact design. The availability of a SteamOS option broadens consumer choices within the handheld gaming market.

Valve assures full feature parity between the Legion Go S and the Steam Deck, including identical software updates (excluding hardware-specific adjustments). A Windows 11 version of the Legion Go S will also be available, offering a more familiar operating system at a higher price point. While currently exclusive to the Legion Go S, Lenovo's success with the SteamOS version could influence future SteamOS implementations on other devices.

Furthermore, Valve announced a public SteamOS beta for other handheld PCs in the coming months, expanding accessibility beyond the Lenovo partnership. This move opens up exciting possibilities for the future of handheld gaming and operating system choices.
