A short time into developing 007: First Light, an event occurred that required parts of James Bond’s next adventure to be rewritten. This wasn’t due to internal studio drama, but rather a global shift: the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

The news was monumental, though its impact on the script was subtle. The changes primarily involved characters referring to protecting both King and country instead of Queen, with Bond serving under His Majesty’s Secret Service rather than her.

“It was fairly minor, yet it felt significant,” shared Martin Emborg, narrative director for First Light. “We didn’t just go in and hit delete repeatedly. It carried weight, especially during recording, as we realized the importance of shifting to His Majesty’s Secret Service. We were entering a new era.”

This marks the first time a 007 story unfolds under a male British monarch. Ian Fleming wrote his original novels shortly after Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1952, and Daniel Craig’s final film, No Time to Die, released just before her death. For Britain’s most famous spy, this is uncharted territory, though IO Interactive found the transition far from daunting.

“It doesn’t feel strange,” Emborg noted. “I feel a deep sense of reverence for it. This legacy spans generations and has inspired countless people. It feels like playing in a sandbox much larger than ourselves.”
