xDefiant, Ubisoft's F2P Shooter, Shutters As Studios Close and Downsize
Ubisoft's XDefiant: Servers Shutting Down in June 2025
Ubisoft has announced the closure of its free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, with servers ceasing operation on June 3, 2025. This decision follows a period of declining player numbers despite an initially promising launch.
The Shutdown Process:
Beginning December 3, 2024, new players will be unable to download, register for, or purchase XDefiant and its DLC. Ubisoft will issue refunds for in-game purchases:
- Full refunds for Ultimate Founders Packs.
- Full refunds for VC and DLC purchases made since November 3, 2024 (processing may take up to 8 weeks, with refunds expected by January 28, 2025. Contact Ubisoft for assistance after this date).
- Founder's Packs and Founder's Pack Elite are not eligible for refunds.
Reasons for Closure:
Ubisoft's Chief Studios and Portfolio Officer, Marie-Sophie Waubert, explained that XDefiant failed to achieve the player base necessary for sustainability within the highly competitive free-to-play FPS market. The game fell short of expectations, despite a dedicated development team and enthusiastic player community.
Impact on the Development Team:
Approximately half of XDefiant's team will transition to other roles within Ubisoft. However, the San Francisco and Osaka studios will close, and the Sydney studio will significantly downsize, resulting in job losses. This follows previous layoffs at other Ubisoft studios in August 2024. Ubisoft is providing severance packages and career assistance to affected employees.
A Positive Reflection:
Despite the closure, XDefiant's Executive Producer, Mark Rubin, highlighted the positive aspects of the game's development, particularly the strong and respectful relationship fostered between developers and players.
Season 3 Launch and Subsequent Closure:
While Season 3 is still planned for release, it will be the game's final season. Access will be limited to players who acquired the game before December 3, 2024. Initial speculation suggested Season 3 would feature content from the Assassin's Creed franchise, though details remain limited.
Early Reports and the Reality:
Insider Gaming's August 2024 report of XDefiant's declining player base and struggles to compete with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 proved accurate, despite initial denials from the development team. Ultimately, the game's performance failed to meet Ubisoft's expectations, leading to the difficult decision to shut it down.
