Zenless Zone Zero Voice Actors Say They Found Out They Were Replaced When the Patch Notes Went Live

Mar 15,25

Two Zenless Zone Zero voice actors, Emeri Chase (Soldier 11) and Nicholas Thurkettle (Lycaon), claim they learned of their replacement via the game's patch notes. This situation highlights the ongoing conflict between SAG-AFTRA and the video game industry over generative AI usage in replicating voice actor performances.

While Zenless Zone Zero, developed by HoYoverse, isn't directly impacted by the strike (pre-dating its July 25, 2024 commencement), actors may choose not to work on projects lacking SAG Interim Agreements, prioritizing solidarity and the fight for AI protections.

Chase stated their replacement stemmed from their refusal to work without a SAG Interim Agreement, emphasizing the importance of these agreements in safeguarding the future of the industry. Thurkettle, a non-union member, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the existential threat AI poses to voice actors and justifying their decision to forgo the role despite its significance in their career. Both actors expressed surprise at their replacement, noting a lack of communication from HoYoverse and Sound Cadence.

HoYoVerse has been contacted for comment. This incident follows a similar situation with Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, where the recasting of Zombies characters William Peck and Samantha Maxis was confirmed by Activision. While Zeke Alton (original voice of Peck) didn't object to the recasting, he expressed concern about the lack of credit for the replacement actor potentially misrepresenting his abilities.
