Ōkami 2 Confirmed to Be a Direct Sequel, Still in Early Development

The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has fans buzzing, though details remain scarce. A recent IGN interview with the project leads shed some light, confirming the sequel is a direct continuation of the original game's storyline.

Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the sequel's narrative continuity with the original Ōkami. When pressed about the identity of the character shown in the TGA trailer (widely assumed to be Amaterasu), director Hideki Kamiya offered a cryptic "I wonder...", but Hirabayashi subsequently confirmed it was indeed the sun goddess.

PlayWhile not surprising to fans, the sequel's development raises questions about the previous game, Ōkamiden. This Nintendo DS title, starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu, received mixed reviews, partly due to its platform and the absence of key original team members like Kamiya. Hirabayashi acknowledged the existing fanbase for Ōkamiden and the varied reception to its storyline, emphasizing that the new sequel directly follows the original Ōkami's narrative.

Ōkami's ending inherently suggests a sequel, leaving ample room for new adventures for Amaterasu and other characters. The game concludes with Amaterasu and another character embarking on an unexplored journey, promising fresh challenges and narrative possibilities.

However, further details remain elusive. The team confirmed the sequel is in its very early stages of development, explaining the early announcement as a result of their excitement. Hirabayashi indicated that substantial updates will likely be some time coming.
