Players & Cards
Tong-Its is designed for three players and uses a standard Anglo-American deck of 52 cards, without jokers. The cards rank from Ace (1 point) to King (10 points), with face cards (Jacks, Queens, Kings) all valued at 10 points, and other cards at their face value.
Objective
The goal is to form sets and runs through drawing and discarding, minimizing the count of unmatched cards in your hand. A run includes three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., ♥4, ♥5, ♥6 or ♠8, ♠9, ♠10, ♠J), while a set is made of three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., ♥7, ♣7, ♦7). Remember, a card can only be part of one combination at a time.
The Deal
The first dealer is chosen at random, with subsequent deals going to the winner of the previous hand. Cards are dealt counterclockwise, starting with the dealer who receives thirteen cards, while the other players get twelve each. The remaining deck forms the stock, placed face down.
The Play
Each turn involves:
- Draw: Start by taking a card from either the stock or the discard pile. You can only take from the discard pile if you can immediately form a meld (set or run) with it, which you must then expose.
- Exposing Melds: You can choose to expose valid melds on the table. Melding is optional when drawing from the stock. To open your hand, you must lay at least one meld on the table. If you can form a set of four without drawing from the discard pile, you can lay it down face down to keep the bonus for a secret set.
- Laying Off (Sapaw): Optionally, add cards to existing melds on the table, yours or others'. There's no limit to how many cards you can lay off in one turn, and you don't need to have opened your hand to do so. Laying off on another's meld prevents them from drawing from the discard pile on their next turn.
- Discard: End your turn by discarding one card onto the discard pile, face up.
