The Authority Film Delayed: Gunn Struggles to Match The Boys' Tone

May 03,25

It seems that the DCU movie The Authority is facing some challenges, as DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has admitted that the project has been placed on the "back burner." Announced as part of Gunn and Peter Safran's Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters DC Universe reboot two years ago, The Authority was touted as a significant project. It focuses on the notoriously brutal superhero team from the WildStorm Universe.

During a recent DC Studios presentation, Gunn revealed that The Authority has been the most challenging project to develop within the Chapter 1 lineup. He cited the influence of Amazon's successful series The Boys and the evolving narrative of the DC Universe as contributing factors to the delays.

"Honestly, Authority's been the one that's been the hardest, both because of the shifting overall story and because of getting it right in a world with The Boys and a world with all the things that The Authority influenced that came out after it," Gunn explained. He also mentioned the need to balance the project with other beloved characters whose stories are already in motion.

Despite these challenges, one member of The Authority, The Engineer / Angela Spica, is set to appear in the DCU's kickoff movie Superman. The Engineer is a standout character, known for her ability to self-duplicate, her technopathy, genius-level intellect, and radio-induced telepathy. The Authority is not the only project facing difficulties. Gunn also mentioned that Waller, a spinoff from his HBO Max series Peacemaker, has encountered some setbacks. However, other projects are progressing well. The HBO Max series Booster Gold is moving forward strongly, and Paradise Lost is considered vital and is being actively developed, with the pilot currently in the writing stage.

Regarding Swamp Thing, Safran noted that DC Studios is prepared to wait for director James Mangold to be available. Mangold, who has been busy with other projects like A Complete Unknown and the upcoming Star Wars movie Dawn of the Jedi, is highly valued by the studio. However, Swamp Thing is not considered essential to the larger narrative of the DC Universe.
