Final Fantasy XIV North American Servers Experience Major Outage: Power Outage, Not DDoS

A significant server outage impacting all four North American data centers of Final Fantasy XIV occurred on January 5th, shortly after 8:00 PM Eastern. While the game has faced numerous Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks throughout 2024, this outage appears to stem from a different source.

Social media reports and Reddit discussions point to a power outage in the Sacramento area as the likely culprit. Witnesses reported a loud explosion, consistent with a blown power transformer, coinciding with the server downtime. This aligns with the location of the North American data centers. Servers returned to service approximately one hour later.

Square Enix acknowledged the issue on the Lodestone and confirmed they are investigating the cause. The fact that European, Japanese, and Oceanic data centers remained unaffected supports the theory of a localized power issue. Restoration was gradual, beginning with the Aether, Crystal, and Primal data centers, with the Dynamis data center being the last to recover.

This incident adds to the ongoing challenges faced by Final Fantasy XIV, which include persistent DDoS attacks and ambitious expansion plans for 2025, including the anticipated launch of Final Fantasy XIV Mobile. The long-term consequences of these recurring server problems remain to be seen.
