GTA 6 Trailer 2 Confirms Release for PS5, Xbox Series X|S; PC Release Unmentioned
With the much-anticipated release of the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 and a significant update to its official website, fans eagerly awaited details on the launch platforms and the newly announced release date of May 26, 2026. The trailer's end showcased the release date alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S logos, confirming that these consoles will be part of GTA 6's initial launch. Notably, Trailer 2 was captured on a PS5, as specifically mentioned in the trailer.
This focus on console platforms leaves many questions about the eventual PC release and potential availability on the Nintendo Switch 2. Some fans had hoped that pushing the release to May 2026 might prompt Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, to opt for a simultaneous PC launch. However, the absence of any mention of a PC version in the trailer and updates suggests that this might not be the case.
This omission aligns with Rockstar's historical approach to game releases, yet in the context of 2025 and 2026, it feels somewhat outdated. Given the increasing importance of the PC market for multiplatform game success, not launching GTA 6 on PC simultaneously could be seen as a missed opportunity. In a February interview with IGN, Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, hinted at GTA 6's eventual release on PC.
"With Civilization 7, it's available on console, PC, and Switch right away," Zelnick explained regarding Firaxis' recently launched game. "With regard to others in our lineup, we don't always go across all platforms simultaneously. Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms."
Despite Rockstar's past reluctance to release games on PC at the same time as consoles, and its complex relationship with the modding community, many hoped that GTA 6 might mark a change in strategy. However, it appears that PC gamers may have to wait beyond the May 2026 console launch, possibly until fall 2027, early 2027, or even May 2027.
In December 2023, a former Rockstar developer attempted to shed light on why GTA 6 is slated for a later PC release and urged PC gamers to give the studio the "benefit of the doubt" regarding these launch plans. The potential delay in the PC version could be significant, considering Zelnick's statement to IGN that the PC version of a multiplatform game can account for 40% of overall sales, or even higher for certain titles.
"We have seen PC become a much more and more important part of what used to be a console business, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that trend continue," Zelnick remarked. "Of course, there will be a new console generation."
As for the Nintendo Switch 2, its absence from GTA 6 Trailer 2 was somewhat expected. While the capabilities of the Switch 2 remain unclear, it is set to run CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077. This led to some speculation that GTA 6, which will also be available on the less powerful Xbox Series S, might eventually find its way to Nintendo's next-generation console.
