Apr 15,25

In *Monster Hunter Wilds*, the beasts you encounter are not only fierce but also uniquely memorable. Among them, Rompopolo stands out as one of the most intriguing Brute Wyvern-type monsters. If you're looking to master this challenge, here's a comprehensive guide on how to unlock, defeat, and capture Rompopolo.

How to Unlock Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds

Your first encounter with Rompopolo happens in Chapter 2 during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. Upon reaching the Oilwell Basin region, Rompopolo will cross your path on the way to Azuz City, and you'll need to defeat it to progress. Once defeated, Rompopolo's entry will appear in your Large Monster Field Guide, allowing you to battle it repeatedly either by exploring Oilwell Basin or starting the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent.

To prepare for battling Rompopolo, arm yourself with water-element weapons, which can be obtained from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Also, equip gear with fire resistance, which you can farm from Uth Duna (initially only the belt and greaves) or Ajarakan later in the chapter. Consider crafting a fire-resistance Talisman like the Fire Charm I or a Defense Charm I for added protection. Before heading into the fight, boost your health and stamina by grilling a meal.

Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses

Rompopolo, with its unique bipedal structure and saggy gas-filled skin, uses gas-based attacks that can cause explosions. It can also inflict poison, so carry Antidotes and rely on your Palico to help cleanse ailments. Be vigilant for these key attacks:

  • Arm Swipe – Rompopolo swipes forward twice with its clawed arms. Dodge easily due to its limited range.
  • Lunge With Arm Swipe – A charging move followed by an arcing swipe with both arms.
  • Tail Swing – Swings its tail towards the target.
  • Poison Stream or Swipe – Sprays poison gas or charges while swinging its head and spraying poison.
  • Oil Explosion – Uses its tail stinger to inject gas into oil pools, causing explosions. Dodge to avoid damage.
  • Charged Oil Explosion – Later in the fight, pumps more gas into oil for a larger explosion. Dodge to minimize damage.

Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?

As with previous *Monster Hunter* games, you have the option to either kill or capture Rompopolo. To capture, weaken the monster until your Palico notes it looks "tired," then use Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps to ensnare it, followed by at least one Tranq Bomb to complete the capture. Both killing and capturing have their merits, mainly affecting the item rewards you receive. While specific differences in items are yet to be confirmed, here are the potential low-rank and high-rank drops from Rompopolo:
