Live-Action Street Fighter Movie Finds a New Director

Legendary Entertainment has chosen Kitao Sakurai, the writer, director, and executive producer behind the comedic series The Eric Andre Show, to helm their new Street Fighter movie adaptation, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Capcom is reportedly deeply involved in this project, which is slated for release on March 20, 2026.

This marks yet another attempt to bring the iconic fighting game franchise to the silver screen. While the 1994 adaptation starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison, may be fondly remembered by many (despite mixed critical reception at the time), this new film promises a fresh take.

Casting details remain under wraps, but fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters in action. The project initially had Danny and Michael Philippou (directors of Talk to Me) attached, but they left the project last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests a potential shift towards a more absurdist tone, a direction that may appeal to those who appreciate the game's more cartoonish aspects.

For those eager to experience the latest in the Street Fighter universe, Street Fighter 6 is now available, recently adding Mai Shiranui to its roster. Read IGN's full review for more details.
