The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is just around the corner, and if you're planning to get your hands on one, you should know it comes with only 256GB of built-in storage. If you're eager to dive into a vast library of games without constantly juggling installs, you'll definitely want to expand that storage. However, the new console takes a different approach compared to its predecessor: it requires a MicroSD Express card. These cards are not only faster but also pricier than the UHS-based SD cards used in the original Switch.

Although MicroSD Express cards have been around for a while, they haven't caught on widely among creative professionals, leading to a limited selection currently available. But with the imminent launch of the Switch 2, expect a flood of these cards to hit the market to meet the demand.

Keep in mind, since the system isn't out yet, I haven't personally tested any of these cards for the Nintendo Switch 2. However, they are produced by reputable manufacturers known for their quality storage solutions.

Why MicroSD Express?

The Nintendo Switch 2 mandates the use of a MicroSD Express card for storage expansion, a decision not thoroughly explained by Nintendo. However, it's clear they aim for faster storage to match the system's internal UFS flash storage, akin to what's found in modern smartphones. This ensures that developers can rely on consistent high-speed storage, whether it's internal or via an expansion card.

You can only use a regular MicroSD card for transferring screenshots and videos from your first-gen Switch. Unlike the PS5, which allows last-generation games on slower external drives, the Switch 2 offers no such flexibility. If you want to expand your storage, a MicroSD Express card is your only option.

Among the few MicroSD Express cards available, the Lexar Play Pro stands out with its superior speed and capacity. It boasts read speeds up to 900MB/s and can store up to 1TB, making it the top choice currently. However, due to high demand from the Switch 2 launch, it's currently out of stock. Keep an eye on it, especially the 1TB version, and consider ordering through Adorama, where it's on backorder until July.

It's slightly slower than the Lexar Play Pro, with read speeds up to 880MB/s, but the difference is negligible for gaming. The SanDisk card is readily available, making it a convenient choice if you want to buy now and not wait.

Samsung's MicroSD Express card, sold directly by Nintendo, adds an official touch to your storage expansion. However, details on its performance and whether it will only come in a 256GB model are still under wraps.
