According to Team Ninja producer Fumihiko Yasuda, the studio has long desired to create a new installment in the Ninja Gaiden series, but struggled to settle on a concept. Eventually, discussions between Koei Tecmo president Hisashi Koinuma and PlatinumGames head Atsushi Inaba led to the involvement of Phil Spencer. Spencer proposed a collaboration between the three companies to kickstart the project.

Phil Spencer confirmed that talks had been ongoing since 2017, following his initial conversations with Team Ninja about a potential sequel. After years of deliberation, they identified the ideal partner in PlatinumGames, known for its expertise in fast-paced action games such as Bayonetta and NieR: Automata.

Last week, Ninja Gaiden 4 was officially announced, and alongside it, a re-release of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, an enhanced version of the Xbox 360 classic, was unexpectedly launched on Xbox, PS5, and PC.

The first trailer indicates that Ryu Hayabusa, the iconic ninja, will lead the charge in this action-packed slasher. The gameplay trailer showcases several new mechanics unique to Ninja Gaiden 4, including the ability to swiftly navigate through environments using wires and rails.

While DOOM: The Dark Ages stole the spotlight at Developer_Direct, Ninja Gaiden 4, the next chapter in Koei Tecmo's beloved series, also made waves during the event. The game is slated for release in the fall of 2025.
