Switch 2 GameChat mandates phone verification

Nov 17,25

Nintendo Switch 2's GameChat will require phone verification during setup.

Nintendo's integrated video calling software comes pre-installed on all Switch 2 consoles, positioned as a flagship feature of the new system.

Users must verify their identity by providing a phone number (or using an existing linked number from their Nintendo Account) before activating GameChat.

A verification text will then associate that number with GameChat activity - so users should mind their behavior!

For players under 16, parental consent via the Parental Controls app is mandatory. Guardians must verify with their own phone number to enable the feature.

Nintendo's website suggests all Nintendo Account holders must complete this verification, even on shared consoles - though IGN has requested official confirmation.

Accessed via the new 'C' button on Switch 2 controllers, GameChat supports:

  • 4-way video calls
  • 24-participant audio chats

The service enables video broadcasting via optional camera peripherals and live gameplay streaming - marking Nintendo's first venture into this online service territory.

Digital Foundry's recent specs reveal indicated GameChat:

  • Significantly impacts system resources
  • Has raised developer concerns
  • Inspired Nintendo to provide specialized testing tools

These tools simulate GameChat's:

  • API latency
  • L3 cache misses
allowing performance testing without active calls.

While the actual performance impact remains unconfirmed until launch (June 5), the inclusion of testing tools suggests potential resource allocation issues.

GameChat will remain free until March 31, 2026, after which a Nintendo Switch Online subscription will be required.

Recent leaks also revealed:

  • First look at Switch 2 game cartridges
  • Samsung's interest in supplying OLED screens
