Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Features Confirmed in New Patent
The Nintendo Switch 2 might look familiar at first glance, but a closer look reveals some significant upgrades, particularly in its redesigned Joy-Cons. Newly surfaced patents shed light on these changes, hinting at magnetic attachment and surprising mouse functionality.
While Nintendo remains officially silent, reports and patents strongly suggest magnetically attaching Joy-Cons to the Switch 2 console. The patents describe a system using magnets embedded in the console's docking recess, and two buttons on each Joy-Con, required for detachment. The patent text specifies, “This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, that comprises a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing.” These buttons, according to the patent, are magnetically aligned with the magnets in the console.
Even more intriguing are illustrations within the patent showcasing the Joy-Cons functioning as computer mice. Holding the controller sideways, the R1 and R2 buttons mimic left and right mouse clicks, with joystick movement potentially providing scrolling functionality.Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con patent includes illustrations for the mouse functionality. The patents further illustrate the versatility of this mouse function, allowing for either a dual-mouse setup or a single-mouse configuration paired with a traditional Joy-Con controller.
The magnetic attachment was among the earliest leaks surrounding the Switch 2, while the mouse functionality emerged later. However, a January teaser subtly hinted at this feature, showing the Joy-Cons smoothly gliding across a surface—a clear nod to the innovative mouse control.
