Nintendo Switch 2 Tariff Delays Pre-Orders in Canada
Gamers collectively groaned last week when the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 preorder date shifted from April 9 to an indefinite postponement. This unexpected change came as a ripple effect of import tariffs imposed by President Trump, causing chaos in financial markets that extended north of the border. In response, Nintendo Canada confirmed that pre-orders in Canada are similarly delayed, rendering any hopes of securing one through a relative in Winnipeg null and void.
In a statement to Canadian tech publication MobileSyrup, Nintendo of Canada explained, "Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025, to align with the timing of pre-orders being determined in the U.S." They added, "Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged."

This mirrors the earlier statement issued to IGN by Nintendo of America on April 4, though the Canadian version omits any reference to the new tariffs.
"Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start on April 9, 2025, to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged."
With the original pre-order window looming closer, there’s still no clarity on when gamers can expect to resume their refresh-and-check routine, leaving many in limbo and apprehensive about a possible price hike from the initially announced $449.99.
Elsewhere, the situation took a different turn in the UK, where pre-orders went live today. Smaller retailers such as EE, GAME, and Smyths quickly sold out, while scalpers capitalized on the scarcity, listing pre-orders on eBay for £500 ($639) or more—well above the retail price of £395.99 ($506).
